Frauds and Scams - The U.S. Census forms have barely been delivered and already seniors are being targeted by scam artists trying to get personal information out of seniors. Fraud expert Shirley Houck joins Joan to talk about this newest scam and others that are being used to trick seniors out of their money and personal information.

Women’s Heart Health - Mon 6pm - Focus On Aging

Women’s Heart Health – Women react differently too and experience heart attacks differently than men...and often that means women do not recognize they are having a heart attack. Joan Bethel talks with Julie MacDonald of Providence Hospital about her project with the American Heart Association to make women more aware of the symptoms of THEIR heart attacks. Plus, Shirley Houck’s Fraud of the Month: bogus medi-care billing.

Homeless Seniors - Mon 6pm

David Teison (Tee-sun) and Clara Risson (Rice-en) talk about the special challenges of being a senior and being homeless.   David is Director of Hope Options with the Everett Housing Authority and Clara, was homeless and over the age of 60. Plus, the “Fraud of the Month” with Shirley Houck of Senior Services of Snohomish County.

Recap Nov AARP National Call-in program - Mon 6pm


On November 24th Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna hosted an AARP sponsored, nation-wide telephone call-in program on fraud and scam threats to senior citizens. Our Attorney General fielded questions from around the state and nation about how to recognize and avoid shady deals and shady people. Joan Bethel presents an edited presentation of that program with a warning for all to “beware.”

Older Americans Act - Mon 6pm


Host and Producer Joan Bethel updates us on the Older Americans Act. Her guests are Rumanda Sousa of Senior Services Information and Assistance and Mary Gosshorn from the Snohomish County Council on Aging. Plus, Shirley Houck has the “Fraud of the Month.”

Comparing Health Care - MON 10/26 6pm

THIS WEEK: Comparing Health Care Pat Mahoney talks with Dr. Joachim Bering, a German trained physician now practicing in the Puget Sound, to get a comparison of the German system of health care with the American health care system. And, Joan Bethel talks with Larry Kalb, President of Health Care for All Washington. He lived in France for ten years and is very familiar with the French health care system. Plus, our “fraud of the month” from Shirley Houck.

Volunteering in Retirement

THIS WEEK:   Erin Pankow, Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager for the Volunteers of America in Everett and John McAlpine, Program Recruiter, for Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Snohomish County, talk about the mental and physical benefits of volunteering and give some suggestions for seniors on where and how to volunteer.
