Job Description

Sound Living Associate Producer works closely with the News Director to develop show topics and guests that will meet the needs of a diverse range of listeners, bring together voices from the margins and from the halls of power, and explore the breadth and depth of the region’s political, ethnic, cultural, environmental, and social dimensions.

Your task is to help create a must-listen-to forum for a diverse community of listeners; a place where engaging, thought-provoking, and meaningful dialog takes place.

Background

KSER is building a live, local interview program - the first of its kind in Snohomish or Island County. Sound Living is a local call-in public affairs show and online forum. Listeners learn about local issues and events, discuss community and neighborhood concerns, speak to community figures, and engage in the civil, informed dialog that is an essential part of our democracy.

Responsibilities & Essential Duties

  • Work collaboratively with News Director to develop topics, recruit guests, and produce a daily interview program.
  • Develop community contacts that embrace a wide diversity of cultures, viewpoints, and concerns.
  • Pitch program ideas and constructively participate in development of others’ ideas.
  • Employ sound editorial judgment and journalistic integrity.
  • Foster an environment of cohesiveness and collaboration with staff and volunteers at KSER.
  • Host other drive-time public affairs programs as required, providing traffic, weather & continuity.
  • Participate in station fundraising events, on and off air as required.
  • Work with Sound Living online producer to contribute content online, including blogging when appropriate.
  • Contribute to and participate in efforts related to multi-platform content delivery and integration.
  • Participate in community engagement and audience-building efforts as required.
  • Work the required hours and schedule for a live, afternoon-drive public affairs show.

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • Excellent journalism skills (prior broadcast experience strongly preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills—both oral and written—with a reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people across a diverse range of cultural, educational and social backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated skill in using online tools and web 2.0 communication strategies.
  • Demonstrated voice skills.
  • On-air experience delivering an intelligent, conversational style.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience at reaching a multi-ethnic, inter-generational audience
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent work experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the North Puget Sound region strongly preferred

Details

Compensation

  • This position is part-time, 2-7pm, weekdays.
  • Salary is $24,000, plus annual COLA.
  • Benefits are not included at this time.
  • 2 weeks paid vacation each year.

Work Environment

Work takes place in the KSER studios in downtown Everett in Snohomish County and in the surrounding communities of Snohomish and Island Counties.

KSER is a community radio station, and uses over 65 volunteers each month to produce the majority of our programming. You will work closely with a range of individuals and personalities every day.
